Personally I recommend renting one. The ones that they sell in the stores are very cheap and you cant even hear the heartbeat until the 3rd trimester, I rented mine through http://www.babybeats.com they are very good, and they dopplers are hospital quality, I got mine for 30$ a month and just returned it the other day. So I think you should look into renting a good quality doppler before you buy one at the store.
