Unusual heart beat sound using Fetal Doppler?
My wife is 30 weeks pregnant and we have had a fetal doppler since 13 weeks. Recently we have started to hear irregular beats although a check at hospital told us everything is normal and to stop using the doppler.
If you listen to the baby lower down under the belly button the heart beat seems almost regular. Listening just above the belly button the beat sounds regular, then changes to a slower double beat like a "chew-chew…….chew-chew". I know it is not the mothers beat but why this double beat? Is this listinging to the in / out flow of the umbilical cord to placenta? Anybody else experiences this?
Thanks for all the answers, very reassuring to hear that things do not always sound perfect. I thought that the placenta was just a continual wooshing sound rather than a beating sound though.

It is pretty normal to hear "weird" heartbeats. I almost never hear a perfect heartbeat when I go in and I don’t worry about it at all because first of all the doc would let me know if something was wrong and second, I have had two other babies and know that its not always as perfect as books make it sound. Between the baby’s heartbeat, the mothers heartbeat, arteries and the umbilical cord you could get just about any sound. I’m sure everything is fine and you should look forward to the end that is coming near.
i have one as well that i bouhgt off ebay.. if you hear a swishing sound its the blood flow in the placenta which is normal..
i have never experienced this, however, i would question is there a change for a multiple birth here?
lol if the dr told you to stop using it, then why dont you?! your just freakning yourself out
That chew chew type sound is her placenta !!
i’m not sure but i have the same things during my two pregnancies and everything still turned out fine….i’m sure your probably just excited and it’s nothing to worry about.
How do you know it is not the mother’s? I really think it is the mother’s.
I hired a doppler from i was 18 weeks till i was 22 weeks an it done nothing but ause me concern. My midwife also told me to stop using it. If there was any problems in your babies heart it would have been spotted at the scans.
That sound is the placenta…
the swish sound is the placenta
technology is a wonderful thing but also a nightmare. the fetal doppler picked up my heart beat as well as our babys!
i am sure it is all ok, why not go to the hospital and say you would like your baby to be monitered, they you will know for sure.
think its really nice you are asking this for your wife and baby, good luck to you all
