Two heart beats found at 34 weeks pregnant - could this mean twins?
I was at my midwife appointment yesterday for my 34 week appointment and the fetal doppler picked up two separate heart beats - one in my lower pelvic region toward the right and the other on my lower left rib cage. She put the doppler back on my lower right pelvic region and still heard the heart beat there afterward, so it didn’t move. Could this mean twins?
Thanks for your input everyone. I did have an ultrasound at 18 weeks which officially showed one baby, but then the ultrasound had what looked to have a been a second umbilical cord in the background. Whether one was hiding behind the other, I really couldn’t say and nor could the professionals.
This is my first pregnancy. I popped out at 17 weeks, and have been measuring about 2 to 3 cm larger every visit with my midwife and they’ve only picked up one heart beat until just yesterday, when they found two - which is why I suppose they had no concerns previously (that, and the 18 week ultrasound only showing one). I know it’s unlikely they missed one but the midwife is sending me in for another ultrasound this monday to confirm everything.
Just wondering what you all thought - thank you.

Have you had an ultrasound? I would strongly recommend it.. if there is a possibly of twins you are going need more than a midwife to deliver, you will need a hospital with proper neonatal facilities.
A sonogram or ultrasound can determine if you are having multiples. Risks with multiples are high. Risks for you and for the baby(babies). Be proactive. contact your normal OB/GYN.. take steps to verify your condition at 34 weeks, you don’t have much time..
Yes how did they not see the twins if u are 34 weeks ?!??! that seems impossible. :/
maybe one was your heart beat? were both the heart beats around the same?
Yes it could mean twins, it just seems a little strange that they have only just seen it was twins…. But oh well, mistakes happen, congratulations!!!!
Was the Doppler picking up your heartbeat and the child’s heartbeat at the same time? That does happen.
I don’t know how you could go 34 weeks without a midwife or OB picking up that there were two near full term fetus in the womb.
It is quite possibke yes to have twins and notbe picked up earlier! Lol not to commin but it happens! Wit twins, one can be behind the other one so u wldnt hear the second heartbeat… It sounds like one is heads down n the other is breech… Get an uktrasound to confirm twins! My mil friend was preggo with twins but when she went to deliver they discovered baby c! So she was preggo with triplets and didnt know it!! Lol congrats!!!
It could mean twins. Some people never find out about it until they give birth…
It’s not impossible, just highly unlikely.
It could also be the heartbeat coming from both the baby directly and the umbilical cord. But why didn’t you discuss this with your midwife??? BTW, if you were having twins, you should have been measuring large for awhile now.
it was yours and the baby’s
