get one off ebay, they have a seletion that are like those used at the doctors office. I just got one for $90 that usually sell for $145. Some sell for $100 when they are priced at $500 or more.
Stay away from those you get at the store, a load of junk and not worth any money.
Not sure what really works best but i bought bebe sounds and couldn’t here much. mostly my own sounds stomach gurgling and such

Bought one at Babies-R-Us…can’t hear a thing (well I do hear my own stomach and like a creaking sound whenever I move my wrist!) …I’m 35 weeks prego!!
I bought the Hi-Bebe BT-200 for $114 (plus $8.50 shipping) on Amazon. I got it at about 12 weeks along, and it works great (it’s the easiest for me to find the baby’s heartbeat on a full bladder and empty stomach–I’m fifteen weeks along now). It’s the best investment I’ve made in a long time. If I ever feel insecure about the baby in-between dr’s appointments, I just get it out verify, "yep, baby’s still alive!" and it even says the BPM on a little screen, which is awesome.
