No Fetal Heartbeat Detected at 10 weeks and 6 days?
Hey There
I went for my first pre-natal exam today and it went well. They gave me all the info I needed, scheduled me for my first ultrasound and all that stuff. They gave me a pap test, and he felt around the uterus and said it was the right size for how far along I am.
So then he used the doppler to try and find a heartbeat, but couldn’t I could hear a distinctive whoosh noise, but no heartbeat. It should be here by now, right? Is there any reason to worry? He said not to, and that he’s probably just hiding right now, but no fetal heartbeat CAN be a sign of miscarriage, right?
I should have just asked him not to try yet:(
My ultrasound isn’t due until I’m 18 weeks along. So 7 more weeks. I have another pre-natal appointment in 4 weeks, in which the doctor was very confident and said "We’ll DEFINITELY hear it then"
also I’m overweight..that could be affecting it as well, right?

Try not to worry. It all really depends on the position of the baby and the strength of the doppler. Some dopplers can detect as early as 7-8 weeks, but my doctors said I probably wouldn’t hear anything until 12-13. Although I did hear mine at 10 weeks. If your doc was really worried, he would have sent your for a ultrasound right away.
Try not to worry, this is still early for hearing heartbeat as the uterus is still deep in pelvic area. I didn’t hear my fourth baby heartbeat until 16 weeks with handheld doppler, our midwives tend not to use this until then because of the panic it can create if nothing is picked up! I’m sure you will be fine, if the doctor thought anything was wrong he would have arranged an ultrasound.
When the baby is that small it’s not unusual to not hear the heart beat by doppler yet. I know it’s hard but I wouldn’t worry yet. I hope your ultrasound is soon, that should make you feel better.
My midwife also tries at 10wks and I was so scared that she wouldn’t find it I called in advance to make sure I could get an ultrasound that day if they didn’t find it. If I couldn’t I would have had her wait an extra couple weeks. Luckily they found it.
The doctorcouldnt get my baby heartbeat at 12 wks and they did a ultrasound adnd he was fine it usually takes 12-14 wks to hear it. so dont worry God Bless
Don’t worry hunny!
At only 10 weeks, even 11, your baby is about the size of a kumquat, just barely over an inch from crown to rump. Thats tiny!!! Its hard to find its hartbeat when its so tiny!
As far as miscarrage goes, if you are under 35 years old, your chance of having a miscarriage is only 15%. And that number will decrease with each passing day and week. In fact by week 12 if you have no signs, that number will drop to less than 3% chance.
When we went to the doctor, it took some doing, but she finally found the heartbeat. It was very, very, very faint, but there. Her exact words to me where, "Thats good that we could find it now. 10 weeks you probably wont hear anything, 11 is the midway point so you may or may not hear anything, and 12 you more than likely will hear something!"
I’m alittle overweight too, and it make it a little harder, but not impossible. I’m 21 weeks along now and doing fine! This is my first and I had more than my share of a few weeks of freaking out. Don’t worry too much. Your body naturally tries to keep the baby and give it everything it needs to grow. Let me know if you have any more questions!!
