Even then it may not be guaranteed. For those with "extra padding" it can take a little longer to hear the baby clearly since the doppler is placed right over the pubic bone where most people carry and extra layer of fat (foopa). If you're using a generic store bought doppler you wont really be able to hear anything until about 16-18 weeks. I was 17 or 18 weeks before the doctor was able to detect the heartbeat with the doppler instrument. I had an ultrasound at 14 weeks to confirm there was a heartbeat.
