My daughters heart rate before birth was in the 120's. My son's was slightly higher. As for it dropping it could of been from him moving around and causing interfence between him and the doppler. The only way to know for sure what you are having is to wait till he's born. Even a sonogram isnt 100%.

i dont know about the doppler, but the heart rate thing is an old wives tale. i had a girl and her heartbeat was always under 140.

The old wives tale about the heart rate is not actually true as your baby's heart rate depends on their level activity, just like adults.

I think it's just an old wives tell. You could make a guess based on this but that's all it would be. I am having a boy and his heart beat has always been around 147-150. Good luck. You are 19weeks you will be finding out before long for sure what he/she is.

about dropping to 55, i would say the baby moved out of the way and you picked up the maternal heartbeat, my daughter (the first) was always in the upper 140 and low 150.. this baby which i found out yesterday was a girl, is always upper 150 to upper 160, but yes it depends on the level of activity your amount of sugar and caffine so on and so forth

IMO, personal dopplers are dangerous for reasons just like you mentioned. A med tech, midwife or OB are trained to use those. For just the average person, all we get is a set of instructions. At your next appointment, take your doppler with you, and ask someone to show you exactly how to use it so you don't have the same problem again.

Congrats on the new little one!!
