I am looking into getting a fetal heart monitor or doppler ( which ever you prefer to call it) but I would like to hear what others have to say about them first
im am about 13 weeks and live in canada there are many places to buy and rent the dopplers here but I want to make sure they work well before i use the money on one.

I have got one and it works brilliantly. I bought it from Ebay.
There are so many times in my prior pregnancies that I worried that I didnt feel the baby move and would go down to the doctor just to get the heart beat checked. I find if I ever have a slight doubt that I havent felt my baby move it is a great sense of relief to know you can use it anytime you want.
As for how it works and sounds, it is exactly like the one that the doctors use.
If this is your first baby or if you are a worry wart like me I would definitely get one. They dont cost that much.
I haven’t used one just yet, but I just rented one through http://www.babybeat.com and its suppose to arrive tomorrow. Feel free to email me and I will let you know how it works out and whether I would recommend it. I have heard a lot of bad reviews from the cheap ones you would buy at Wal-Mart for like $20. The one I am getting is like the types they use in the doctor’s office.
i assume you are talking about the ones you can buy at walmart or target… if so, i have one.
it is tough to use because of a lot of crackling etc. and if you do not find the heart beat right away it will make you nervous. and it is hard to find the heart beat. now keep in mind i bought mine 7 years ago. and perhaps they have made them better since then. i liked it, i just had to keep in mind that the baby is fine even if i can’t find the heart beat right away.
I looked into them. I looked at target.com and another site and they ALL had bad reviews. They said they couldnt even hear anything at all and was just a waste of money.
Heres the site you can read the reviews.

I did hear that theres ones you can rent and those work better but im really not sure where you can rent them at.
The one i got when i was pregnant was ok. it is hard to hear the baby because it picks up everything!!! i could hear trucks on the highway a half mile away. if you wait until the baby is bigger (6-8 months) it is easier to hear tho.
Hi, I am from canada too! I loved my doppler. On those days when the baby hasn’t moved as much, or after you bump your tummy hard by accident, that thing calms you down so fast. I couldn’t find any in my area. I looked into ordering some. I found out that the cheap ones are c r a p. I ordered one from Bellybeats.com They had wonderful customer service and that thing was here a day and a half later from the States. They rent out the medical ones like the doctor has. My research shows that those are the only dependable ones. Mine was awesome. $25 a month
I’ve got a fetal heartbeat monitor and I’m currently 23 weeks and I haven’t even been able to hear the heartbeat thru it yet. I bought it at Target about about $20. The instructions say I may not hear it until around 28 weeks along. I’m still waiting to be able to hear my baby’s heartbeat with this one I bought. Until I pick it up, I’ve only heard my baby’s heartbeat so far at my Dr. visits.
Mel you answered this question and I have some more questions for you about the doppler you bough. can you please email me at
darlenedrawbridge_1975@hotmail.com
thank you very much
the fetal doppler will also pick up baby movement so the baby gets to a point they dont move much the dr always made me drink something sour like real orange juice and it would get the baby moving every time
I have one and I think its great! I got a really good deal (on ebay!) and it only cost me about 29.99..its called lifesounds. In the early stages (from about 12 weeks) it was good reassurance to hear the heartbeat (just to make sure baby was still there!), and it is also just a nice feeling to hear your baby’s heartbeat. Now I am 23 weeks and I feel the baby moving constantly so don’t use it as much, but now I can hear lots of other movements too! When I feel the baby kick hard, you can hear it thump against the doppler, like it is trying to kick it off! And when baby moves I can hear all the swooshing around going on.
It takes some practice in distinguishing between your own and the baby’s heartbeat but you soon get to know the difference. The baby’s is much faster and sounds like it is underwater. I would definately recommend getting a doppler!
