I asked my OB about getting one and they advised against using them on a daily basis so I never bought one for my first pregnancy and don’t plan on it for this one either. I don’t stress about it because when we stress the baby feels that stress too.
The reason being is the sound the devices produce (just like ultra sounds) sounds to your baby like a helicopter is landing in your belly. Therefore causing unnecessary stress to your baby while leaving you feeling better because you can hear the heartbeat.
To each their own.
I bought a Summit one at Target for around $20 but I could never hear my baby’s heart.
I rented one from bellybeats.com at 14wks and was able to use it just fine. I would suggest if you do rent one to keep in mind that no one has studdied long term use so you might want to use it for just a minute each day. I used it until I felt my son kick each day then sent it back. I would check on him each morning and each night before bed just for a minute. It uses the same technology as ultrasounds.
got one on ebay - worked great after 12 weeks!!!! i loved finding the heartbeat - just relaxed me whenever i heard it, i dont think i t was ver accurate with rates though…..
i just looked for it and couldnt find it… it ran for about $200 regularly on there though…
oh i think this is it…http://cgi.ebay.com/B1-Fetal-Heart-Doppler-detector-Prenatal-Baby-Monitor_W0QQitemZ160269873455QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item160269873455&_trkparms=72%3A570%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&timeout=1218667529406
I bought one off ebay for $60. I was able to hear the heart beat at 10 weeks, and now I get to hear it everyday. I love it.
I just tried to find the one I bought on ebay but I couldn’t find out like it. But what I did was I would find one I liked, and read about it. Its best to get the ones that say you can hear it at 10 week - 12 weeks, then google the name brand of it, and try to find it on a web site that rents them. If you see that it is one that is rented out then you know its a good one. Mine is one you rent.
Here is a web site that shows the one i bought. Its the one on the far right.

I bought one at Wal-mart for my first pregnancy, and never heard anything, however, I could put it up against the wall and hear the TV in the other room, lol. When I brought it to my dr’s apt and asked her to use it, she said that I wasn’t the first to buy one, but there is a reason that the dr’s don’t use the ones you can buy, because a Doppler is a sophisticated piece of equipment, lol. It never worked for me, and I just ended up throwing it away, but like I said, great for spying on people in the next room, provided they are speaking in a normal voice not whispering, lol.
