I rented one from Heartones.com on a Wed. afternoon and it was here by Friday with regular shipping. It is $22 a month if you rent it month to month, a little less per month if you pay for the rental for a certain number of months. I use it every night before I go to sleep. It is soothing to me to hear my baby's heartbeat right before I fall asleep. It is a 3mhz model, which is what a lot of OB's use. It works great and works just as early as the ones the docotrs use. There are also 2mhz models at other websites, not sure about the price, but I am sure they work just as great if not better. I have heard the 2mhz are good for overweight mothers, but I am not thin and like I said, mine works great.
I have checked out the ones at retail stores and the problem with them is that they don't pick up the heartbeat as early or as clearly. I learned that from a borrowed one from a friend and reviews I have read online.
The way I see it is if you have the extra cash, then why the hell not? It brings peace of mind and its so cool!
Oh and make sure you know which heartbeat you are looking for, cause it will pick up both on your tummy. The slower one is yours, while the fast one is the baby's.

You can buy a fetal monitor at places like Wal-Mart, Target, or any type of maternity place. I got one and it worked great. It only costed like 20-30 dollars. You can get them by renting them, it can cost a lot also. Some hospitals rent them. (the same quality they use)
