Do they really and truly work? And how far along do you have to be before you can detect the heartbeat?

You can rent and buy them. Look on ebay under dopplers, they are all over the place on there. Renting or buying you can try babybeat.com, or bellybeats.com.
As far as detecting the heartbeat I think you have to be 12 weeks or more. I heard my baby’s heart at 12 weeks with a doppler in office.
I was going to rent one because I thought it would make me feel at ease being able to check on the baby everyday, but I ended up not getting one and pretty soon the baby started moving every day, so that was my reassurance that all is okay.
I don`t know if u can rent it, but I saw some at Babies R Us with like $30. I think it will take 3 months until you can hear the heartbeat, and u have to know in what position your baby is in, because otherwise, you might end up hearing your own heartbeat.
Prebably not…since their device usually costs about $600, and you can pick up fetal heart tones about 11-12 weeks.
Don’t bother with those baby-r-us fetal dopplers..they don’t pick up much either..
I’m sure you can rent a fetal doppler, but you can also buy one. They work really well. I think to detect a heartbeat you need to be about 9wks. But it is very hard to detect your own baby’s heartbeat if your not a doctor. Good Luck!
You can rent them online for between $20 and $50 per month.
You can initially hear the heartbeat around the 9th or 10th week of pregnancy, but can be difficult for an untrained person to located. As the baby grows it is easier to find.
Some doctors allow you to do so, yes. If your doctor does not have rental units, there are places online you can rent them from.
The "real" dopplers, such as the ones that the doctors use, do work. The heartbeat can usually be picked up by them around 10 weeks, sometimes a little later depending on the position of the baby and the size of the mother.
Try http://www.BabyBeat.com , that is one website that provides rental units. I think they are approximately $25/month.
